23-26 | April | 2019 || Palermo, Sicily, Italy

Maria Beatrice Coltelli of the University of Pisa gave a talk at the 2019 Eurofillers Polymerblends conference held at the University of Palermo Building 19, Viale delle Scienze, Palermo, Sicily, Italy this April.

The talk focussed on the production of plasticised bionanocomposites for filmed applications intended for use in skin-contact products in the context of the PolyBioSkin project.

Simultaneously, Vito Gigante of the University of Pisa presented a poster presentation about tuning physical properties of PLA through blending with PBAT, equally presenting the results of research conducted within PolyBioSkin.

Vincent Bonin of Fibroline introduced PolyBioSkin at the 2019 edition of the Plant Based Summit with a session entitled Harnessing bio-based and biodegradable polymers for advanced performance and more sustainable skin-contact applications in the Absorbent Hygiene (AHP), Biomedical, and Cosmetic Sectors. The presentation was part of a special session on R&D perspectives for new bio based products and materials, moderated by PolyBioSkin’s communications manager Götz Ahrens of European Bioplastics.

Plant Based Summit is one of the key international conferences and business meetings for the bio-based industry and looking specifically at the kind of innovation proposed and promoted by PolyBioSkin. To find out more, get in touch!

12-16 | May | 2019 || Lago di Como, Italy

Karen de Clerck and Özlem Ipek Kalaoglu Altan of the University of Gent, Serena Danti and Bahareh Azimi of the University of Pisa, and José María Lagaron of Bioinicia attended EUPOC 2019, where a PolyBioSkin poster was delivered.

The objective of this conference is to bring together the various disparate communities that work on electrospun polymer-based materials. These communities include those working on the development of fibrous materials for filtration, catalysis, energy, nanotechnology, drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications. The conference presented topics with similar underlying themes that originate in a variety of research areas with very different perspectives.

Dr Özlem Ipek Kalaoglu Altan of the University of Ghent presented PolyBioSkin at this high-level expert conference organised by CENTEXBEL, the renowned centre of excellence in textile and plastic processing research based in Belgium.

Project coordinator Dr. Simona Neri from IRIS presented the PolyBioSkin project at Greenwin conference!

The aim of the conferences is to make an inventory of innovative technologies and valuation approaches of green chemistry and white biotechnology activities in the world, to share knowledge and foster the creation of new research and development projects, in both sectors. In 2019, the focus will be on polymers, from alternative raw materials to eco circularity of those polymers.

PolyBioSkin SME partners Fibroline (France) and Texol (Italy) exhibited and promoted PolyBioSkin at the 2019 edition of IDEA in Miami!

This premier conference and exhibition for the nonwovens and engineered fabrics sector is an ideal opportunity to talk to a global crowd of highly relevant stakeholders about the research being conducted in PolyBioSkin, and especially the functionalised biodegradable high-performance fabrics produced from renewable resources.

04-05 | December | 2018 || Berlin

The 13th EUBP Conference put bioplastics in the spotlight for over 400 senior executives from across the bioplastics value chain, including producers, converters, brands, policy makers, academia, and NGOs. PolyBioSkin was represented with a poster exhibition and consortium partners from TFNS, UNIPI, ARMINES, and conference host EUBP, providing an excellent opportunity to pitch the goals of PolyBioSkin to relevant and interested stakeholders. The success of the event for PolyBioSkin was greatly supported by BBI-JU Executive Director Philippe Mengal’s presentation at the conference, in which he mentioned PolyBioSkin as one of the many on-going efforts at realising a more sustainable and circular bioeconomy in Europe.

29 November – 1 December | 2018 || Belgrade, Serbia

Prof. Branka Pilic gave a talk on 29th November 2018 on Functional bio-based materials in regenerative medicine at this 3-day Belgrade-based international conference on regenerative medicine, addressing an international audience of experts from both academia as well as industry.

22 | November | 2018 || Rome, Italy

On 22 November 2018, the PolyBioSkin consortium led by partner MAVI organised a 1-day Info-Day about the project. The event was attended by around 40 experts primarily with a background in dermatology as the event took place in connection with the 13th World Congress of the International Society of Cosmetic Dermatology (ISCD).

PolyBioSkin partners including TFNS (Faculty of Technology, Univ. of Novi Sad), Bioinicia, and the University of Westminster attended the 2nd Conference for Early Stage Researchers in Polymer Science through the Aegean in October 2018, sharing their insights in PolyBioSkin-related research with other academics and experts.

20 – 21 | November | 2018 || Rome, Italy

On 20 – 21 November 2018, the PolyBioSkin consortium met in Rome to update one another and discuss the progress of the project, address critical issues, and pave the way for the successful continuation of PolyBioSkin. As always, the meeting was very insightful, constructive, and productive, and a big thank you goes to the organisers at MAVI, TEXOL, and IRIS, and the Università degli Studi Guglielmo Marconi for providing the excellent facilities, which also enables the PolyBioSkin consortium to host the PolyBioSkin Info Day on November 22!

16-17 | November | 2018 || Czech Republic

Prof. Maria Beatrice Coltelli presented a poster entitled Properties of Biocompatible and Eco-Friendly Poly(lactic Acid) (PLA) Blends and Composites at the recent COMAT conference in Pilsen, Czech Republic.

04-07 | September | 2018 || Kyoto, Japan

Luisa Trombi and Serena Danti of the University of Pisa presented a poster entitled Nanochitin-nanolignin complexes to deliver bioactive molecules for skin regeneration at the 2018 TERMIS World Congress in Kyoto, Japan. TERMIS is the premier event for the dissemination of cutting edge research in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The conference is the official World Congress of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society, whose purpose is the worldwide advancement of both the science and technology of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

02-06 | September | 2018 || Balatonfüred, Hungary

Clément Lacoste of PolyBioSkin partner IMT MINES Alès (ARMINES) as well as Laura Aliotta and Vito Gigante of PolyBioSkin partner University of Pisa (UNIPI/INSTM) attended and presented at the 2018 edition of BiPoCo, the 4th International Conference on Bio-based Polymers and Composites based in Balatonfüred in Hungary.

Clément presented their research on the development of a superabsorbent polymer on the basis of recycled cellulose material for the use in diaper products, which is quintessentially important PolyBioSkin research for the eventual development of high-performance bio-based and biodegradable AHP products.

Our partners from UNIPI presented on Rigid filler toughening of PLA-calcium carbonate composites: effect of particle surface treatment and matrix plasticization (Laura Aliotta) and PLA rubber toughening with PBAT: fracture mechanics, analytic evaluation of ductile/brittle transition, melt viscosity study and films production (Vito Gigante).

21-24 | June | 2018 || Kunming, China

Prof. Pierfrancesco Morganti presented PolyBioSkin at the 24th annual meeting of the Chinese Dermatology Society in Kunming, Yunnan, China, in June 2018. The skin-contact products developed in PolyBioSkin are highly interesting form a dermatological point of view, and at the same time Asia is by far the biggest growth reason not just in terms of biopolymer production, but also terms of consumption of PolyBioSkin target applications such as the facial beauty mask.

The University of Ghent Faculty of Engineering’s Department of Materials, Textiles and Chemical Engineering (= “MaTCh“) hosted a 1-day event mostly for industry participants introducing their work and on-going research project initiatives, including PolyBioSkin. The event was very well-received by the interested audience, some of them representing globally renowned companies. PolyBioSkin was represented by members of Karen De Clerck’s research unit – what a great opportunity to speak to potential adopters and industrial end-users!

26-27 | April | 2018 || Berlin, Germany

The PolyBioSkin consortium met in Berlin towards the end of the first year to update one another on the progress of all on-going research and support activities, find solutions to any open questions and challenges, and plan and prepare the next steps and focus areas moving forward.

On the second day of the meeting, an Exploitation Workshop was held in order for all partners to concretise the results they expect to issue from PolyBioSkin, to reappraise their exploitation intentions and expectations, and to specify the tools and pathways for exploitation.

13 – 14 | December | 2017 || Pisa, Italy

The entire PolyBioSkin consortium met in Pisa at the end of 2017 for the first time since the kick-off meeting, to assess the progress so far at the initial stage of the project. The meeting was invaluable in many ways for all partners, providing the opportunity to discuss early findings, assess if the project is on track, adjust where necessary, and  reaffirm the very positive and cooperative atmosphere of the kick-off meeting earlier that year.  The consortium took several decisions that continue to be very important for the progression and success of the project during this meeting.

6 | December | 2017 || Brussels, Belgium

Represented by IRIS, INSTM (Univ. of Pisa), and European Bioplastics, the PolyBioSkin team was very excited about the opportunity to present their project to so many other relevant stakeholders in the “BBI family” so early into the 3-year research and innovation action. Presenting our poster and talking to journalists, many other projects – some of them directly relevant – interested stakeholders from industry, and of course representatives of the European institutions was extremely valuable!

28 – 29 | June | 2017 || Castelldefels, Catalunya, Spain

PolyBioSkin is hitting the ground running! At the June 2017 kick-off meeting, organised and hosted by coordinators IRIS, all consortium partners attended and demonstrated their commitment to sending PolyBioSkin off to a good start.

Could the value of this kick-off meeting be overestimated? Hardly! Two full-on days of presentations and technical discussions provided essential early day input, understanding, and coordination for the research and support work to follow in the coming three years. Having the BBI-JU’s Project Officer in attendance enabled an added level of constructive-critical evaluation of the key risks and focus areas and provided very valuable guidance.

The kick-off meeting paved the way for the constructive and collaborative approach, the problem solving capacity, and the constructive mentality of the consortium as a whole, putting PolyBioSkin on track for the 3-year RIA.
